Routine (non-emergent) Headache Treatment

There are two basic approaches that are used for the treatment of migraine headaches. The first is termed an "abortive approach" and this refers to the situation in which the migraine headache is treated when it first becomes apparent to the patient. Other treatment modalities that can be incorporated include relaxation therapy, biofeedback, homeopathic treatments, over-the-counter analgesics as well as prescription medications.

The second means of treating migraine headaches is referred to as a "preventive or prophylactic approach". This approach refers to the situation in which a patient is placed on one or more medications the purpose of which is to prevent or dramatically diminish the frequency and severity with which a patient suffers from a migraine or other type headache.

When these are successfully employed the patient may look forward to a 70% or greater reduction in the severity and frequency of headaches.  In some cases virtually all headaches can be reduced or eliminated.  At The Westchester Headache Center we stand available 24/7 to treat severe headaches on an emergency basis if they prove to be non-responsive to the usual therapeutic modalities.

Many people with migraine use both approaches by taking medications originally developed for epilepsy and depression to prevent future attacks, and treating attacks when they happen with drugs called triptans that relieve pain and restore function. Hormone therapy may help some women whose migraines seem to be linked to their menstrual cycle. Stress management strategies, such as exercise, relaxation, biofeedback, and other therapies designed to help limit discomfort, may also reduce the occurrence and severity of migraine attacks.
